Last night I as driving from Harrisburg to Leisburg, Pa., a distance of about eighty miles. It as late. I as late and if anyone asked me ho fast I as driving, I'd have to plead the Fifth Amendment to avoid self-incrimination. Several times I got stuck behind a slo-moving truck on a narro road ith a solid hite line on my left, and I as clinching my fists ith impatience.
At one point along an open highay, I came to a crossroads ith a traffic light. I as alone on the road by no, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to a halt. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, aiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started ondering hy I refused to run the light. I as not afraid of being arrested, because there as obviously no cop around, and there certainly ould have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, after I'd met ith a group in Leisburg and had climbed into bed near midnight, the question of hy I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract e all have ith each other. It's not only the la, but it's an arrangement e have, and e trust each other to honor it: e don't go through red lights. Like most of us, I'm more apt to be restrained from doing something bad by the social convention that disapproves of it than by any la against it.
It's amazing that e ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And e do, too. Trust is our first inclination. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't e naturally to us.
It's a damn good thing too, because the hole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This hole thing e have going for us ould fall apart if e didn't trust each other most of the time. We do hat e say e'll do; e sho up hen e say e'll sho up; e deliver hen e say e'll deliver; and e pay hen e say e'll pay.
We trust each other in these matters, and hen e don't do hat e've promised, it's a deviation from the normal. It happens often that e don't act in good faith and in a trustorthy manner, but e still consider it unusual, and e're angry or disappointed ith the person or anization that violates the trust e have in them.
I as so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.
